Discussion—Health Communication; Culture; and Advocacy

Health communication initiatives help to clarify who needs to know what and when the information needs to be known. Health communication is important in the health program planning process. The information might be used to influence health decisions or behaviors among people. There are a variety of ways health initiatives are communicated (i.e., brochures, banners, media, pamphlets, or other advertising methods).

Using the readings for this week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following:

• Research and select four health communication plans. Determine if the health message or concept had been pretested. Explain in 2–3 paragraphs the findings.

Discussion—The Literature Review Process

As the community assessment is completed and the statement of the health problem is clearly stated and appropriately quantified using the available epidemiologic tools, one must now start looking at an adequate and suited intervention or policy to address the particular public health problem. The availability of scientific literature is an invaluable source of information to begin searching for the most ideal and best-suited intervention, program, or policy to specifically address the targeted objectives emanating from the community assessment.

Because of the considerable amount of scientific literature, a systematic approach to literature searching is imperative to locate credible, high-quality evidence as efficiently and exhaustively as possible. To be systematic, a guide must be applied to aid in what literature is important, where to search for related literature, how to find evidence-based literature, and how to organize the results of a search.

In your analysis and evaluation of the three related peer-reviewed scientific articles for Week 3 Project, please share with your peers any difficulties, strategies, or techniques that you developed, discovered, or utilized to simplify or enhance the literature review process.

The steps for reviewing the Scientific Literature and Organizing Information are listed below. Please note that you do not need to follow the same order.

• Review the issue statement and purpose of the search
• Select a bibliographic database
• Identify key words
• Conduct the search
• Refine the search
• Select and organize documents for review
• Abstract pertinent information from each document
• Summarize and apply the literature review

Week 2

Plan of Action—Using the Evidence-based Approach to Design a Plan of Action to Address a Specific Public Health Problem

This week’s readings have demonstrated the desirability of EBPH, definitions of EBPH, the scientific factors to consider when determining whether some type of public health action is warranted, tools for measuring impact of EBPH practice and conducting a community assessment to identify issues within a community, prioritizing these issues, developing interventions to address these issues based on a review of what has worked effectively in other places, and evaluating the process, impact, and outcome of intervention efforts.

Now, utilize assigned and suggested weekly readings, the South University online library, the Internet readings, and references to search, evaluate, and retrieve relevant evidence-based public health literature.

Then, use the evidence-based techniques learned so far and design a model, plan, or approach to tackle the public health problem, issue, situation, or concern you identified in Week 1 Project.

While developing the plan, do the following:

1. Use scientific evidence to assess or review the public health problem selected. Which information from research studies will be utilized in your assessment? Will you use:
   1. Etiologic studies
   2. Studies used to develop methods for measuring or modifying behavior
   3. Studies used to identify the factors that influence the behavior
   4. Studies used to determine whether public health interventions are successful in meeting their stated objectives for risk reduction
2. Evaluate and identify which analytical tool(s) is most appropriate to apply or assess your public health problem. Of the different types of analytical tools, which will you use to assess your public health problem:
   1. Analytic tools for measuring intervention impact and effectiveness. For example, systematic reviews, meta-analysis, etc.
   2. Economic evaluation, a set of methods for comparing benefits and costs by using the cost-benefit analysis, cost-effective analysis, cost-utility analysis. 
3. Analyze and list the necessary steps and procedures that would be appropriate to apply as you conduct a community assessment of your public health problem.
   1. Justify why a community assessment is necessary.
   2. Discuss the range of partnership or stakeholders that might be useful in conducting community assessments.
   3. Outline who in the community will be assessed, what to assess, and how to conduct assessments.
   4. Describe how to disseminate the community assessment findings.

Chapter 1 of our text provides a number of reasons why people choose to explore literature. Clugston (2014) writes that there is “a powerful curiosity about human relationships and how to cope in the world in which we find ourselves” (section 1.1, “Connecting: Entering Into a Literary Experience,” para. 2). The text gives a number of general motivations for reading, but it is helpful to put those motivations into context. From the first case study, evaluate the medical practice and suggest at least two options (not discussed in the case) to maximize patient throughput and revenues without compromising the quality of medical care. Support your suggestion.

I believe the medical practice in the case study is currently on overload. The practice itself is doing good things, but they the doctors in the study are putting themselves in position to be in trouble. The long hours as well as the number of patients are taking a toll on both doctors. Per the exhibit in our book, the doctors cannot do as much as they should due to the fact that the surgeries take as much time as they do, and the surgeon changeover time. One way to maximize patient throughput and revenue would be to open a separate location. Business expansion is a good problem to have. If this was to take place, one surgeon could operate one practice and the other could run the other. This would also allow the surgeons to bring on additional surgeons who in turn would help with the workload. This way patients are getting the same quality of medical care, or maybe even better. The second way to maximize patient throughput would be to take the current facility into two separate shifts. One day shift and one night shift. This way they facility is open longer and both doctors are not operating in the same hours.

• Speculate how you would apply the theory of constraints to this medical practice. Explain your position and support your answer

  I would apply the theory of constraints to this medical practice by evaluating the number of surgeries that can be done each week. That is the constraint. Since that has been identified, we would then have to work to improve upon that, which goes back to the top of this discussion. The only ways this can be increased would be to increase the number of surgeons, increase the hours of the practice, or open another facility.
